Philosophy

My practice begins with a collaborative and non-judgmental exploration of the challenges that bring patients to treatment. Establishing a good fit is essential, as it ensures both comfort in the therapeutic relationship and confidence in the ability to address the issues at hand. Together, we work toward a shared understanding of the difficulties, define the purpose of treatment, and align on the best approach. This may involve therapy, medications, supplements, lifestyle changes, or referrals to trusted specialists.

In my practice, medications are used thoughtfully and only when needed. They can be invaluable when therapy and lifestyle changes alone aren’t enough or when those changes cannot take hold without support. While some situations call for immediate intervention, medications are more often a tool to help patients engage fully in the work of healing.

A core value of my practice is respecting patient autonomy. Every individual deserves to make informed decisions about their care. My role is to provide clear, balanced information about risks, benefits, and alternatives so each patient feels empowered to choose a course of treatment that reflects their individual values and goals.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in modern relational psychoanalytic thinking, which emphasizes the importance of a dependable patient-provider relationship. This foundation makes it possible to explore and heal other relationships, including the relationship with oneself. When appropriate, I also draw on techniques from motivational enhancement therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for relapse prevention.

I strive to provide care that is sensitive to developmental, relational, and cultural contexts. As a European-American physician, I remain aware of the privilege inherent in my position and approach my work with humility and openness to the diverse experiences my patients bring.

The patients who benefit most from my therapeutic approach are often those seeking deeper insight into recurring life challenges and who are committed to regular, consistent engagement. For those already in therapy with another provider, I offer medication consultation to complement their ongoing care.

Finally, in my practice, patients are seen as individuals—not diagnoses. While diagnostic clarity can inform effective treatments, psychological formulations often offer a more nuanced understanding of struggles and a clearer path toward health.
